ARTIST STATEMENT

I specialize in an expressive, contemporary take on Impressionism using oil on stretched canvas. My work explores the contemporary everyday life using broken and expressive brush strokes to push past the idea of a static image. Each painting invites the viewer into a living moment of a bygone instant of time.

Growing up on a rural farm in New Hampshire allowed me to experience the importance of nature and its ever-changing passage through time. Beauty and complexity exist in each mundane moment of life. During my undergraduate years in Texas, I was drawn to the early Impressionist painters and how they showcased and immortalized a snapshot of their daily lives. Inspired by this, my oil paintings explore my own observations of a momentary occurrence of the passage of time.

Time is a crucial element to my paintings. The essence of how time is perceived and those infinite finite moments that collectively make up the whole. Each moment is a precious storyboard of our lives and the world around us. They are full of color and light and motion and are gone in an instant. I want to capture the emotions, a memory, those ever-changing moments of mundane life and show their movement, the color, and the excitement of living. To preserve these insignificantly important moments, not as a static image, but as a piece of life captured in time.
