A hunter-gatherer at heart, my ongoing collection of random objects range from the sublime to the ridiculous. By utilizing these seemingly outdated, useless, but interesting objects in much of my work, I find the end result not only evokes strong memories and feelings in me, but those of the observer as well.
Much of my work is inspired by a small jug I came across years ago in an old Florida antique store. This 'memory jug' was encrusted with simple objects belonging to a loved one who had passed. A chain, a lock of hair, a tooth, a button… One source I found attributed this practice to enslaved people. By filling this jug with water, the love and thoughts of the family and friends would rise up to the heavens and join the loved one.
