ARTIST STATEMENT

I graduated from the New Hampshire Institute of Art in 2014 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, specializing in photography. My personal work is inspired by two tragic losses and seeking proof that their spirits could still exist in the natural world. That proof came with the recurring appearance of dragonflies.

On the surface, dragonflies are characterized as winged insects with elongated bodies that primarily dwell in and around fields and fresh bodies of water. Spiritually, their existence has a much deeper meaning, one of transformation, imagination, and reincarnation. Their time on earth, and even on a single surface, is fleeting and can be captured by those who truly understand and appreciate their more meaningful definition.

By photographing them at such close proximity, I am able to observe their behavior, get to know their distinct movements, and really see them face-to-face.

This series of “portraits” in combination with color, light, and composition, aims to capture the essence of lost loved ones in their transformative state.
